A POSSIBLE READING OF JOHN 1:1-18

This is my own attempt at translating the original Greek. It is quite literal in an effort to preserve the original Greek language structure. The structural links are not based on grammar, but on the development of the argument in the pericope. I’m trying to present a graphic depiction of what was written and how the argument developed.

Words that get repeated in this brackets [ ] are repositioned from the original Greek language structure to where it makes the sentence readable in English. Words in ordinary brackets ( ) are inserted to aide the translation of a specific Greek concept that would otherwise make no sense when left as is.

This forms part of research I’m doing on the occurrence of the word “testify” (marturia, in Greek) in the gospel of John, and the possibilities of developing an emerging, missional ecclesiology for today through understand the role the word plays in the narrative structure of this specific gospel.
