It is very appropriate that the Naked Pastor (and might I dare say an online friend of mine?), David Hayward, posted the following cartoon in his time of tribulation (go see what I refer to ons his website, available here).
I think we should do some introspection (we, being the organised church) on the way we deal with differing opinions, faith crises and people's life crises. I am still thinking on this - when we cloud our calling to a broken world with a lens of sin primarily, we tend to view everybody as sinners. Therefore, guilt and repentance becomes the mechanism of choice to help the sufferers.
Shouldn't we first save lives, extend unconditional grace and love and the living presence of God through Jesus before we start poking in eyes looking for pieces of wood? To tell people to confess and repent is NOT the only way to communicvate God's love.
Thanks, David, for helping me articulate something of the theological issue I am currently wrestling with, even if it is only partial.
